In celebration of the 109th International Womenâs Day, Mayor Inday Sara Duterte has recognized the womenâs contribution to the economic development of the society, emphasizing that economic empowerment of women would redound to the countryâs overall growth.
In her message, delivered by City Councilor Mabel Sunga-Acosta, the mayor thanked everyone for celebrating Womenâs Day and bringing greater public attention to their causes, not only by the women for the women but the causes advocated by all sectors for the benefit of women.
âThis yearâs theme, âEkonomikanhong Pagpagahum sa Kababayen-an, Dalan Ngadto sa Tiunay nga Kalambuanâ speaks of how we can empower our society better by empowering our women with appropriate economic opportunities,â her message reads.
Mayor Sara said the 109th International Womenâs Day is an opportunity for all of the people, â not just for Dabawenyas, but for Dabawenyos in general â to find ways to support the economic development of women in the society.
âIn this modern age, in this age of equal rights, come equal responsibilities â whether in raising our children or in earning for the family, thus, it is vital that employment and entrepreneurial opportunities are made available sa atong mga Dabawenya â single man or naay asawa, naay anak o wala,â she added.
The mayor also underscored that employment or entrepreneurship, as well as financial literacy skills, gives women greater confidence in themselves.
âBeyond the means of giving women and their families a better life through the financial freedom brought by economic opportunities, employment or entrepreneurship, as well as financial literacy skills, gives us greater confidence in themselves, in our ability to make a difference â not only in the lives of those we hold dear, but to the community at large as well,â she said.
The celebration of the International Womenâs Day on March 8 of every year is mandated through Proclamation No. 224 issued on March 1, 1988, by the late president Corazon Aquino. The same law also declared the first week of March of every year as womenâs week. CIO
