Mayor Inday Sara Duterte hopes that Davao City will continue to keep its low COVID-19 cases amid the extended Alert Level 1 status following the super spreader events, such as local campaign rallies and the national and local elections this month.

“Very low lang gihapon ang atong cases sa COVID-19. We do hope na it will continue to be that way (Our COVID-19 cases remain very low. We do hope that it will continue to be that way),” the outgoing mayor said during her Special Hours program via 87.5 FM Davao City Disaster Radio (DCDR) on Monday afternoon, May 16, 2022.

The city currently has 14 active COVID-19 cases, 12 of which are asymptomatic while one is a moderate case and another is a severe case.

Mayor Duterte, the presumptive vice president of the country after leading by a landslide in the recently-concluded national election, said she’s confident that the moderate and severe cases will be taken care of by the hospitals.

She added, “I think my fearless forecast murag magpadayon siguro nga ingon ani ang atoang cases sa COVID-19. Kung musaka man, tingali’g asymptomatic ra ug mild (I think my fearless forecast is that our low COVID-19 cases will continue. If it would increase, it will mostly be asymptomatic and mild cases).”

The local chief executive, however, said the low COVID-19 cases may have made Dabawenyos complacent as manifested by the low turnout of the city’s booster vaccination rollout.

As of May 13, 2022, Davao City logged a total of 1,33,0176 first dose vaccinations and 1,312,211 second doses
or fully vaccinated individuals.

Of the 1,312,211 who received the two primary doses, only 254,679 got their first booster jabs. And of the 254,679 Dabawenyos administered with the first booster dose, only 2,805 returned at the vaccination hubs for their second booster shots.

“My assessment sa behavior sa mga tao, wala’y sense of urgency kay wala sila’y makitang mga patay. Wala ga- increase ang cases (My assessment on people’s behavior is that they don’t have the sense of urgency as they are not seeing deaths. COVID-19 cases are not increasing),” Mayor Duterte added.

She also said that the City Government of Davao, through the Vaccination Cluster of the Davao City COVID-19 Task Force, will continue with its mobile vaccinations to reach more far-flung barangays whose residents may still have not gotten any dose of the anti-COVID-19 vaccine as they may have not heard about the coronavirus disease and the vaccination program at all.
