A young Dabawenya bagged the top prize in the first Online Essay Writing Contest organized by the Filipino Heritage Festival Incorporated and the National Commission for Culture in the Arts in celebration of the National Heritage Month.

Besting 600 other submitters from other cities and provinces in the country, 20-year-old Harriet Lumpot from Toril, Davao City essay “Durian, Mangosteen, Rambutan in a box” was named first prize and a P6,000 cash prize for the Essay Writing English Category.

Her piece featured Davao City’s festivities and how this reflects the city’s rich culture and heritage.

Lumpot said that writing is her passion and wanted to showcase how rich the culture of Davao City.

“We have to show to the people how important it is to preserve the historical and cultural heritage of this country for also the generations to come,” she said.

The competition aims to enhance the skills of young writers ages 16-20 years old and to give importance to the preservation of historical and cultural heritage sites in the country. The online competition was open from April 24 to May 25, 2020. CIO
