The Sangguniang Panlungsod passed and approved on Tuesday, June 14, during its regular session, Resolution No. 03550-22 and its corresponding Ordinance No. 0980-22, both Series of 2022, for the temporary closure of roads in preparation for the inauguration of Vice President-Elect Davao City Mayor Inday Sara Duterte at the San Pedro Square on Sunday, June 19, 2022.
The SP-approved ordinance, however, is awaiting approval of the city mayor.
Based on the new resolution and ordinance, the areas that will be closed to vehicles are the corner A. Pichon (City Hall Drive), corner A. Pichon (City Engineer’s Drive), corner Bolton St. – Rizal St., corner Crooked Road-Rizal St., corner Bolton St.- C.M. Recto Avenue, corner San Pedro St.- Anda St., corner Bolton St.- A. Pichon, and corner Anda St. – A. Pichon from 9 p.m. of June 16 up to Monday, June 20.
Davao City Transport and Traffic Management Office (CTTMO) chief Dionisio Abude, in a Viber interview with the City Information Office (CIO), said all the closed roads remain open to pedestrians.
Dili man gud na mahimo sa isa lang ka adlaw (It’s necessary to close the roads early as there are things needed to be set up for the stage. The railings will have to be put up as well. We are not only preparing for 100 people but a lot more. Tents and portalets will also have to be installed. All of that cannot be accomplished in just one day).”
Extending the road closure a day after the activity will also give time to the restoration, cleanup, and dismantling of the stage, railings, tents, and portalets.
The CTTMO chief said the equipment for the stage will be set up starting Thursday, June 16, 2022.
He also said that all CTTMO personnel will be on duty this Sunday, including the field inspectors. Over 100 personnel will be stationed near the activity area while the rest of the traffic enforcers will man their respective designated areas.
“Any street naa na’y nakatoka nga inspector sa field this Sunday. Mag-duty ang tanan, wala’y gipa-leave sa ilaha kay daghang VIPs ug daghang tao pud lisod na magkaproblema sa traffic. As of now, so far as the CTTMO is concerned ready na gyud atong opisina (All streets will be manned by a field inspector on Sunday. Everybody will report for duty, nobody was allowed to take a leave since there are a lot of VIPs and people are expected to come, it would be difficult to have traffic problems. The CTTMO is ready for the inauguration),” Abude added.
He reminded Dabawenyos to observe the minimum public health standards such as wearing of face masks and sanitizing with alcohol if handwashing would be a challenge amid the crowd.
He also said that since the event will be held in an open area, the public should be ready for any weather condition.
Meanwhile, backpacks and jackets are prohibited inside the activity area along with alcoholic drinks, illegal drugs, and pointed objects. The audience must also place their garbage wastes in transparent cellophane as plastic garbage bins are also not allowed in the event area.
Drones are also not allowed except for those with security clearance. Sidewalk vendors are allowed to peddle in the area to augment food availability to the audience.
