The Dan-ag Dabaw and Panag-abli marked the opening of the Christmas celebration in the city, with events that Dabawenyos can enjoy with lesser restrictions.
Davao City Mayor Baste Duterte, in his speech during the Panag-abli sa Davao on Thursday, December 1, 2022, said that he just signed the Executive Order that adopts the optional wearing of masks in indoor and outdoor settings within the city.
Even with a warning that the wearing of facemasks should remain, the Dabawenyos present at the program did not hide their excitement about the announcement.
The Dan-ag Dabaw and Panag-abli is not the first time Dabawenyos gathered but what is different today is that this is the first Christmas in the two years of the pandemic that people have actually watched spectacular sights in person.
Dance performances, musical renditions, fairy ballet, and a breathtaking aerial performance surprised and added a holiday cheer to Dabawenyos and guests during the opening that started around 6 pm at the Rizal Park.
Davao City Vice Mayor Melchor B. Quitain gave two phrases as a message to Dabawenyos: thank you and congratulations.
He thanked Dabawenyos for following the minimum health standards such ad wearing facemasks, and getting vaccinated. He highlighted that without the cooperation of Dabawenyos a much grander and upgraded Christmas celebration would not have been possible.
Before the official lighting ceremony, Mayor Baste greeted the visitors and officials who came and extended gratitude to the organizers of the Pasko Fiesta 2022, the officials, and the employees behind the colorful opening.
He said that what makes the city of Davao more joyful is the people who follow the rules and regulations of Davao City.
The mayor also reminded Dabawenyos to follow the other rules and regulations of the city, especially the long-standing observance of the firecracker ban. He urged Dabawenyos to be patient in bearing the traffic congestion brought about by the influx of people gathered in the city during this season.
In his last note, the mayor wished Dabawenyos a merry Christmas and a prosperous new year.
After his speech, the mayor led the Christmas Lighting that lit up San Pedro Square areas near City Hall Drive, the Sangguniang Panlungsod, and the Christmas Tree at Quezon Park.
After the ceremony, the 3D Wall Mapping illuminated the Davao City Hall, which brought delight to the crowd at the San Pedro Square.
The light show will be showcased every night for the whole month of December.
