A historic event for Davao took place Sunday, June 19, 2022 as outgoing mayor, now Vice President-elect, Sara Duterte took oath in San Pedro Square, Davao City. Duterte became the youngest vice president in history, the first vice president from Mindanao, and the first sworn into office in the City of Davao.
Vice President Duterte’s inauguration was attended by local and national lawmakers, foreign ambassadors, and various Filipino artists. They included the first family led by President Rodrigo Duterte, President-elect Ferdinand Marcos, Jr., the Chinese ambassador to the Philippines Huang Xilian, Senators and senatorial candidates Loren Legarda, Sonny Angara, Bato dela Rosa, Larry Gadon, Harry Roque, and Salvador Panelo.
Despite the complex security logistics the event needed, the Davao City security cluster prevailed through its coordinated effort in ensuring the safety of not only the over 600 high-profile guests but also that of the tens of thousands of Filipinos in attendance.
In an interview with the City Information Office Sunday, Public Safety and Security Command Center Head Angel Sumagaysay congratulated Dabawenyos for the successful conclusion of the inauguration and said that no incident of crime or injury was reported during the event. The PSSCC Head credited the close coordination and open communication between all security units in the city, together with the Armed Forces of the Philippines and the Police Regional Office XI.
“Congratulations sa ating lahat ano. Very successful ang oath-taking and inauguration ng ating kagalang-galang na bise-presidente ng Pilipinas. So far very peaceful and orderly ang ating event ngayong araw na ito … Very close ‘yong coordination natin sa multi-agency coordinating center natin at meron tayong joint command post. Walang naitala na pangyayari gaya ng snatching, pickpocketing. So very successful siya (Congratulations to all of us. The oath-taking and inauguration of our honorable vice president of the Philippines was very successful … We had very close coordination with our multi-agency coordinating center and we have a joint command post. No incidence of snatching or pickpocketing were reported. So this was a big success,” Sumagaysay said.
Sumagaysay also attributed the event’s success to the 4,200 security personnel that were all driven to work in keeping public order and security during the ceremony. He added, “Umaabot kami ng four thousand ang integrated security personnel. So in short, halos lahat ng mga uniform units nandito, tinulungan tayo, at ito nga; napakaganda ng results (We numbered up to four thousand integrated security personnel. So in short, almost all of the uniformed units are here, helping us. And that is why we have very good results.”
Sumagaysay said that the Davao City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office and the Davao City Central 911 reported two cases of individuals fainting due to heat exhaustion. They were immediately given aid and quickly recovered. The event ended at almost 11 p.m. after the musikahan open-access concert. CIO
