Officials of the local government, regional offices, and security forces gathered Monday morning to honor national, unsung, and daily heroes for National Heroes Day at the Unknown Soldier’s Monument at Osmeña Park.
Davao City Mayor Sebastian Baste Duterte led the wreath laying, which was followed by a gun salute at the monument.
In his welcome speech, the mayor highlighted the importance of remembering our heroes and living up to their legacies.
Commodore Carlos V. Sabarre, the Commander of the Naval Forces in Eastern Mindanao, said in his speech as the guest speaker that National Heroes Day is a day that we reflect on the bravery of Filipinos who sacrificed sweat, blood, tears, and even their lives for our current freedom.
Sabarre also recognized those who faithfully served our flag, whether or not recognized by history.
“We continue to celebrate those unsung heroes whose names may not grace our history books, Google, or Wikipedia, yet lived with dignity and dedication for the nation. Today is not just to honor those who sacrifice their lives for freedom this day celebrates all past and present heroes of the Philippines,” Sabarre said.
He also added that real heroes of the present are those who stand as good examples in their offices, schools, churches, or any organization.
