Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte called on Dabawenyos to use the masks recommended by doctors to protect them from infections caused by viruses such as the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (Covid-19).
In an interview over Davao City Disaster Radio, Mayor Sara said doctors do not recommend the use of masks made of cotton because it doesn’t protect from the virus.
Using reusable masks is not correct to filter the virus, thus, doctors did not recommend wearing masks, except those assigned to monitor public places, because people are using the incorrect face mask against the virus, Mayor Sara said. Those assigned to monitor public places were told to use the correct mask.
The mayor said it is recommended to use reusable masks with pockets where they can put disposable filters. These filters should be the right kind which should be impenetrable by anything wet or water resistant. The mask should also be disinfected every after use.
The city government, through the City Transport and Traffic Management Office (CTTMO), Davao City Police Office (DCPO), and Task Force Davao, are distributing masks to Dabawenyos every morning at assigned spots all over the city.
There are around 8,000 masks already distributed.
Those in the private sector who want to donate masks may go through the City Mayor’s office for the contact numbers and list of units or sectors where they can distribute the masks directly.
Meantime, the public is still advised on the best ways to protect oneself and others from infection by washing hands frequently or using an alcohol-based rub, physical distancing, and practice respiratory etiquette by coughing into a flexed elbow or cover with a tissue. CIO
