The City Government of Davao will no longer allow the use of disposable plastic items — such as drinking cups — during meetings and other activities.
During the department heads meeting on Monday morning, City Administrator Zuleika T. Lopez announced that they will no longer use single-use plastic items during meetings to help lessen the usage of plastics in the city.
Lopez noted that the concern for the environment is not just the concern of the City Environment and Natural Resources (CENRO) but of everybody.
“It has been found out that much of the garbage generated is composed of plastics and all forms of (it). In our own way in the City Government of Davao, we’re coming up with a policy to ban the use of plastic in all our meetings, conferences, etc.”, she said.
Lopez said that they will now encourage department heads to bring their own cups during meetings to avoid the use of plastics, including water bottles.
“This will go a long way to prevent the increase of plastics in our garbage”, she added.
The executive department also endorsed a proposed resolution to the City Council to enact an ordinance banning the use of single-use plastics and encouraging reusable alternatives in official events of the city.
Solid Waste Management is one of the 10 priority agenda of Mayor Inday Sara Duterte.
Mayor Inday has been very particular in preserving the environment and even created the Bantay Dagat program, which aims to clean the coastal areas of the city, in 2017.
The Bantay Dagat program takes place every second Saturday of the month. CIO
