Clean-up drive yields over 1.7k sacks of collected trash

A total of 1,717 sacks of garbage were collected during the city-wide coastal clean-up activity on September 16.

The clean-up drive was held in celebration of the International Coastal Clean-up (ICC) Day which is celebrated every third Saturday of September. This year’s ICC Day had the theme “Clean Seas for Healthy Fisheries: Sustainably Feed the Global Population.”

Rodolfo Caducoy Jr., City Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) Environment and Waste Management Division- Information, Education and Communication Campaign focal person, said all 26 coastal barangays in the city participated in the clean-up.

The activity was led by the barangay functionaries of the coastal areas and participated in by volunteers from government agencies, public schools, the private sector, and civil society groups.

“Pati mga students sa mga schools active sila na mag-volunteer sa mga ing-ani na mga activities with regards to conservation of our environment (Even students from our schools are active volunteers in activities such as this with regards to conservation of our environment),” Caducoy said during the Go Clean, Go Green program of the Davao City Disaster Radio on Tuesday.

A total of 3,909 volunteers joined the clean-up.

Caducoy said a large chunk of the waste collected were plastic bottles and plastic wrappers.

Coastal barangays then set out to segregate the collected garbage and to make certain that only residual wastes end up in the landfill. A portion of the plastic waste collected will be handed over to the Bantay Dagat’s recycling facility in Daliao, Toril.

The marine litter recycling facility processes plastic waste and integrates these into the production of sustainable hollow blocks and bricks or eco-blocks. CIO
