Department of Education (DepEd)-run elementary and high schools in Toril will have additional classrooms after Mayor Inday Sara Duterte handed over newly-constructed school buildings on Tuesday.
Mayor Sara handed over a two-storey school building with four classrooms to Bayabas Elementary School and a one-story building with two classrooms Crossing Bayabas National High School, which are both in Toril district.
Following the handover of the new classrooms, there are now 81 classrooms that the city government has given to public schools in the city over the last three years.
Mayor Sara said the construction of school buildings is a partnership between the city government and DepEd-11 to address classroom shortage each year.
âThese classrooms were specifically requested by the DepEd. Since the city government is the one who collects the Special Education Funds, we financed the construction of the classrooms while the site is owned by the DepEd,â she said.
Mayor Sara said it is the mandate of the Local School Board to ensure that the bulk of the funds of the Special Education Funds is allocated for the construction of classrooms.
She noted there is still a shortage of classrooms in the city but not due to the implementation of the K to 12 program.
âWe already have a shortage of classrooms even before the implementation of the K-12, it just worsened since we will be needing classrooms for Kindergarten, Grade 7 and Senior High School,â she said.
Mayor Sara said the city is fast-tracking the construction of more classrooms to ensure that the studentsâ education will not be hampered. CIO
