The Davao City Sports Development Division, in collaboration with the Department of Education XI,  launched its sports education training program for public school coaches and trainers at the Almendras Gym on Friday (July 29).

The program, a five-part training seminar that will be held once a month until November, is an initiative under the “Aktibo Dabawenyo” campaign of the city sports office.

Participants will undergo seminars and trainings that will cover sports psychology, physical therapy, injury prevention, strength conditioning, and sports physiology.

Basic life-support and first-aid training will also be conducted in coordination with the Davao City Central 911.

The program kicked off on Friday with an ‘Introduction to Coaching’ course and a ‘Strength and Conditioning’ seminar attended by over 100 participants from all public school districts and clusters in Davao City.

City Sports Office head Mikey Aportadera, during an interview with Byaheng Do30, said the program is aimed at expanding and bolstering sports education in the city by cultivating quality public school sports coaches and trainers.

“Among gina-target ang (We are targeting) the trainers and coaches of public schools. Kay para aron inig maabot ang panahon that (So that when) they will be handling athletes at the public-school level, kabalo na sila (they already know) how to properly manage the athletes,” Aportadera said.

Aportadera said the trainings will be conducted by certified physical therapists, sports conditioning coaches, and sports psychologists.

Aportadera said the program will prepare public school coaches to better guide and manage the city’s young athletes as face to face classes are slated to resume this month.

“Among gipangandam pud ang resumption sa full face-to-face na klase sa mga public schools. Ang sports is one of the mediums na pwede nato matanggal ang stress sa pandemic, anxiety, tanan-tanan (We are preparing for the resumption of face-to-face classes in our public schools. Sports is one of the mediums by which we can relieve stress from the pandemic, anxiety, and everything else),” Aportadera added.

DepEd XI Senior Education Program Specialist Jonas Piore said the program will cultivate “quality coaching” in the city’s public schools and will enable trainers to “carry our athletes to the real world.”

“Kaning mga coaches nga atoang participants karon, mao ni ang nagreprisentante po sa kada district og cluster, so apil ang elementary og secondary.  Hinaut unta na kung unsa ilahang matun-an diri, mahatag pud ni down the line sa lahat po ng mga coaches sa Davao City (These coaches that are participating now, they represent the districts and cluster, that includes elementary and secondary. Hopefully, they can pass on down the line what they have learned here to all the coaches in Davao City),” Piore said.  CIO
