As part of the 86th Araw ng Dabaw, the City Government of Davao through the City Tourism Operations Office (CTOO), will hold the Sayaw Pinoy Folk Dance Competition on March 12.
This marks the return of the long-running Araw ng Dabaw activity after a three-year hiatus due to the pandemic.
âThere are three categories in the competitionâ the childrenâs category, the junior, and the adult category,â said Sayaw Pinoy Folk Dance Competition event organizer Corazon Agustin during the I-Speak media conference on Thursday.
âThis dance competition is literature-based. Meaning, the dances are all documented and sa libro lahat ito (and can be found in books),â Agustin added.
This yearâs competition will have a total of 21 contingent groups that are either school-based or community-based.
âMost of our entries, especially in the childrenâs category, are school-based. For the junior, we have school-based and community-based dance groups. Then for the adult, there are entries from outside Region XI, open kasi ito siya (because this is an open event),â Agustin said.
Under the childrenâs category, groups will perform lively mimic dances, the juniors will perform rural and skill dances, while adults will perform Spanish-influenced dances.
A new feature to this yearâs Sayaw Pinoy, Agustin said, is the provision of a live seven-member rondalla group coming from Manila which will be providing the musical accompaniment to the 21 dance entries.
The winning groups for the three categories will each receive P25,000, the second placer will be awarded P15,000, the third with P10,000 while a consolation prize of P5,000 will be awarded to a runner-up.
The Sayaw Pinoy Folk Dance Competition will be from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Sunday at the SM City Davao annex event center. CIO
