The City Agriculturist Office (CAgro), as part of its preparation for El Niño, is poised to identify which are vulnerable areas for the long dry spell expected to hit the city in the third quarter of the year.

“We are in the process of conducting the mapping of where those areas are para mahatagan nato og (so that we can give them) attention during the El Niño and we can readily deploy our standby irrigation facilities,” CAgro Officer-in-Charge Edgardo Haspe said during the I-Speak media forum on Thursday.

He said that they are mapping out the vulnerable areas, where cash crops such as rice, corn, and vegetables are located.

Haspe said that such areas would need irrigation during El Niño. Also included in their monitoring are areas that lack irrigation facilities.

“Our number one production area is Marilog and Paquibato. In Marilog are our rice and corn and at the same time vegetables. Nagsugod na ang atong engineering division pag identify asa ang mga areas and also in Paquibato.

Meanwhile, to prepare the farmers for the dry spell, CAgro is conducting an information drive for climate-resilient crops to ensure an available food supply. They are also focusing on the registration of high-value crop farmers to crop insurance, as the majority of rice
and corn farmers are already registered.

The office also coordinated with the barangay to identify potential sources of water that can be utilized during the dry spell. CIO
