Students, professionals, and visitors buying coffee from the newly opened “The Library Café” by Coop Cups on the first floor of the Davao City Library and Information Center (DLIC) unknowingly contribute to the income of local coffee farmers with every sip.

Agripino L. Torres, the CEO of Manuel Guianga and Sirib Growers and Employees Multipurpose Cooperative (Magsige MPC), the operator of the Coop Cups, said in an interview with ByahengD030 during the soft opening of the shop last December 8, 2022, that the shop supports the livelihood of coffee farmers in Barangay Baganihan, District 3.

“This coffee shop is managed by a cooperative and with the support na binibigay dito, we are giving good price, good food, and siyempre makakatulong tayo ng maraming maraming tao dito sa Davao City because we have so many members dito sa kooperatiba. We also have a lot of Indigenous People who are planting coffee, definitely magkakaroon sila ng ready market (This coffee is managed by a cooperative and with the support given to this, we are giving good price, good food and of course, we are helping many people in Davao City because we have so many members. We also have a lot of Indigenous People who are planting coffee, definitely, they will now have a ready market),” Torres said.

City Library and Information Center Head Salome Enoc, in a separate interview with Byaheng Do30, said the soft opening of the coffee shop has been a much-awaited event, especially because it gives the readers and visitors an area for a coffee break.

“Ang atong mga estudyante kay pag mag breaktime they also want to have a coffee break so pwede na gyud siya karon. I am glad na nahitabo ni siya karong December para magfull bloom na because this is actually just a soft opening (Our students during breaktime also want to have a coffee break so this already became possible. I am glad that it is made possible this December so that it will fully bloom because this is actually just a soft opening),” Enoc said.

Davao City Economic Enterprises Officer-in-Charge Maximo Macalipes Jr., in a separate interview with Byaheng DO30, said that the Coop Cups Library Café, as an added service at the library, is the city’s support to local businesses and also generates revenue for the city because it pays rent for the space it occupies.

“Makadugang pud siya na mu-entice ug encourage ang atoang mga young ones or even ang atoang library goers to visit our newly opened na library at the same time maganahan pa pud sila magstay diri (This shop entices and encourages our young ones and even our library goers to visit our newly opened library and at the same time, they may want to stay longer here),” he said.
The Soft Opening of the Coop Cups last December 08, 2022 was attended by Davao City Vice Mayor Jay Melchor Quitain, Cooperative Development Authority XI Regional Director Ruben Cunanan, City Coop. Devt. Office Head, Luzminda Eblamo, City Information Office Head, Harvey Lanticse, and Ms. Rhoda Ruth Pillerin, the CEO of Model Cooperative Network.
