The winners of the Kadayawan 2022 Hulagway Photography Contest have been announced.
Of the 451 entries, the best 20 photographs were chosen.
This year’s photo contest, spearheaded by the City Information Office, had five categories—- the Pamulak (photos taken during the Pamulak sa Kadayawan and Pitik Kadayawan), Indak-Indak (shots taken during the Indak Indak sa Kadayawan), Pag-abli (images snapped during the opening of the Kadayawan Village, 3D Mapping and Pag-abli sa Kadayawan), Garbo sa Tribo (photos depicting the Dula Kadayawan, Hiyas sa Kadayawan Talent Night and Coronation) and Kasikas (photos taken during the Sayaw Kadayawan, Bantawan Cultural Presentation and Tambayayong Kadayawan).
Participants were required to send in one photo per category.
The consolation prize winners were chosen per category—- three entries each from the Pag-abli, Kasikas and Garbo sa Tribo and four photos each from the Indak-Indak and the Pamulak –bringing the total number of consolation prize winners to 17 entries.
Three entries were chosen overall, irrespective of the category.
The panel of judges– Photojournalist Jojie Alcantara, Sunstar editor-in-chief RJ Lumawag and Kadayawan 2018 Hulagway winner Dexter Arcenas –deliberated on the winning photographs on September 2.
According to Alcantara, this year’s Hulagway winners took photos that depicted the theme “Kasikas” which celebrated the festival’s return after a two-year hiatus.
Alcantara said the winning photos also presented fresh perspectives never before captured.
Ian Requiso’s “Beat in the Dust” bested all other entries in terms of impact, said Alcantara. Taken during the Pitik Kadayawan competition, the photo perfectly captured the vibrant atmosphere of the Kadayawan Festival, winning P20,000 cash and a trophy.
The second place went to the photo titled “Matigsalug Girl” taken by Henry Doctolero. Arcenas said its simplicity, good lighting and balanced composition earned the photo the cash prize of P15,000 and a trophy.
Jerome Batain’s “Aura of a Datu” landed third place, bagging the P10,000 cash prize and a trophy. Lumawag said the dramatic lighting, dark colors that perfectly frame the subject and the sense of isolation evoked by the picture make the piece an unforgettable snapshot of the Kadayawan.
Mayor Sebastian Duterte also picked Batain’s photo for the Mayor’s Choice award. Winning the photographer P5,000 cash and a certificate.
The 17 consolation prize winners will each receive P2,000 and a certificate. CIO
