The Davao City Sports Development Division on Monday launched the three-day Aktibo Basketball Workshop at the Teodoro Palma Gil High School.

The workshop is participated by elementary, high school, and senior high school students from the first district’s Barangay 34-B, Barangay 4-A, and Barangay Catalunan Grande. The participants were selected with help from the Davao City Police Office (DCPO) which also provided transportation.

Some 600 students from the first district are expected to join the three-day workshop.

The training, which is part of the city sports office’s “Aktibo Dabawenyo” campaign, aims to encourage the youth to venture into sports and live a healthier, more disciplined lifestyle.

The program began with a “basketball basics and fundamentals training and pre-coaching,” which was conducted by the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas.

The city sports office head Mikey Aportadera, in an interview with ByahengDO30 on Monday, said the goal of the program is to discourage the youth from engaging in illegal activities by pre-occupying themselves with athletic endeavors. He said the program also aims to turn young Dabawenyos into model citizens that will inspire their peers.

Aportadera said that young people from Davao City’s other districts will have the chance to join the program in the coming months.

“So hinaot na inig balik nila sa barangay, kini sila, (So we hope that when they go back to the barangays, they would become ambassadors of goodwill,” he added. CIO
