The City Government of Davao, through the Davao City Police Office (DCPO), on Tuesday inaugurated the new three-story Police Station 17 building in Barangay Baliok.
Director Alberto Lupaz, the city’s police chief, said the P8.9 Million facility, which started construction in August last year, was aimed at providing a stronger security in Barangay Baliok and in the surrounding areas.
This would also mean, Lupaz said, that residents will no longer have to travel all the way to the Toril Police Station for their safety and security concerns.
“Ang area talaga originally under ang lugar na ito is Toril Police Station. In which, kapag titingnan natin, napakalaki ng area so kaya nga (nag-suggest) ‘yong Philippine National Police – Police Regional Office XI na lagyan dito kay very strategic (We can see that area was originally under the responsibility of the Toril Police Station. In which, if we look closer, is too big an area so the Philippine National Police – Police Regional Office XI suggested to put up (a station) here because it is very strategic),” Lupaz said.
Although the DCPO had previously deployed a police detachment in the area, Lupaz said Baliok’s dense population and numerous residential areas prompted the creation of its own police station to better safeguard residents from crime.
“Maraming mga housing areas at marami ring mga tao dito, kaya nga nilagyan dito so it can boost our capability in responding to any call of emergency or crime situation (There are many residential areas and many residents here, that is why we put a station here so it can boost our capability in responding to any call of emergency or crime situation),” he added.
Mayor Sebastian Duterte, in a statement read by Lupaz, congratulated the DCPO and the Police Station 17-Baliok security personnel for the turnover of the new building.
The mayor said he and the entire local government, is confident that the new facility will bolster the agency’s response capability in the area.
The DCPO and the City Government of Davao are planning to add more police stations and detachments in far-flung areas. CIO
