The Davao City Agriculturist Office (CAGRO) has reopened the Organic Farmers Market at the Rizal Park starting April 1, 2022, and it is open twice a week to support organic farmers selling their products – fruits, vegetables, and ornamental plants.
In an interview on Davao City Disaster Radio Tuesday, CAGRO Head Leo Brian D. Leuterio said that the two-day-a-week activity provides a space for organic farmers from Davao City to sell their products and help provide economic opportunities.
“This is open Thursday and Friday. It is composed of 15 to 30 farmers and farm associations which are into organic farming,” Leuterio said, adding, these vendors have long practiced organic farming and have trained other farmers on the ways of organic farming.
According to Leuterio, the farmer’s business activity in the area is not for free as they pay rent for the area. It is aligned with the directive of Mayor Inday Sara Duterte to activate all the economic opportunities available for everybody.
Leuterio said that in coordination with the office of Councilor Ralph Abella- Sangguniang Panlungsod Committee on Agriculture and Food Chairperson, they are crafting an ordinance requiring the public markets to have an organic section each. They plan to start in Agdao.
“This will include manok na organic, dili lang vegetables but also meat products (This will include organic chicken, not just vegetables but also meat products),” Leuterio said. CIO
