The City Government of Davao has given financial assistance and sent responders to several areas in the Visayas and Mindanao that were gravely affected by the onslaught of Typhoon Odette in mid-December.

During her weekly interview on the Davao City Disaster Radio (DCDR), Davao City Mayor Inday Sara Duterte thanked the Sangguniang Panlungsod, led by Davao City Vice Mayor Sebastian Duterte, for holding a special session to grant financial aid to areas under state of calamity, which was sourced from the city’s disaster fund.

“This has been approved already by the Davao City Disaster and Risk Reduction Management Council as well as our Sangguniang Panlungsod. We’d like to thank our Vice Mayor and the office of our councilors for conducting a special session para lang niani, para sa assistance sa mga Pilipino nga apektado sa baha (for the assistance to Filipinos affected by flooding due to Typhoon Odette),” Duterte said.

Based on the approved financial assistance granted to local government units (LGUs) affected by Typhoon Odette, the provinces of Surigao del Norte, Dinagat Island, Guimaras Island, Bohol, Cebu, Southern Leyte, and Surigao del Sur will receive one million pesos each.

For the cities of Butuan, Iloilo, Cabadbaran, and Surigao, the city government granted each of them P500,000 cash aid while P300,000 financial assistance will be given to the municipalities of Kitcharao, Cagwait, and Mainit.

Earlier, the City Government of Davao also sent a team composed of doctors, social workers, and rescue personnel in response to the request of the provincial government of Bohol for aid and assistance in clearing operations. The team returned in Davao City on December 26.

The team covered four hard-hit municipalities of Bohol including Ubay, The Island of Pitogo, Loboc, and Inabanga but the main focus of the team are the municipalities of Pitogo and Ubay covering 22 barangays.

Duterte said that the entire Davao team focused on providing medical missions, debris clearing in barangays, as well as psychological first aid and medical post and evacuation centers.

She added that based on the report, the team consumed all the medical supplies and endorsed the remaining ones to the municipal health offices of Ubay and Pitogo.

“We also cater to several emergency cases like vehicle crashes and other medical cases by our emergency doctors and responded to one open water rescue of a capsized Bangka in Pitogo Island. Our teams covered and conducted medical missions on small islands under CP Garcia municipality. And being the first on the ground, our assessment and working teams provided very valuable information for all the other national agencies who came,” Duterte said.

The report added that the medical teams catered to a total of 2,479 patients and cleared the roads in 24 barangays.

“We would like to thank the personnel of 911, City Social Welfare and Development Office and our emergency doctors who readily gave up their Christmas in the arms of their families to serve Bohol [which] was hit and who requested personnel to help them didto sa ilahang pag respond sa bagyong Odette (respond to typhoon-affected residents),” the city mayor said.

Aside from that, the city government also extended assistance to the city of Surigao by providing heavy equipment to expedite the clearing operation for the ports to operate again.

Meanwhile, Duterte likewise thanked private donors who gave financial and non-financial assistance and coursed it through the city mayor’s office to help Odette-hit families.CIO
