Living up to its tradition of helping fellow countrymen affected by calamities, the Davao City government, kind-hearted Dabawenyos, and private companies joined hands in pooling resources for the relief assistance to Typhoon Odette affected areas in Cebu, Bohol, Leyte, Dinagat Islands, and Negros Occidental.
Davao City’s relief assistance teams left for the typhoon-stricken areas in Leyte and Cebu on December 19; Bohol on December 20; and, Dinagat Islands and Negros Occidental December 21 via land trip.
Davao City Mayor Inday Sara Duterte, on her official Facebook page posted on December 19, reported that “Tubig, food packs at iba pang supplies ang ating ipinadala ngayon sa Cebu para sa mga naapektuhan ng bagyong Odette (Water, food packs, and other supplies were sent to Cebu for those affected by Typhoon Odette).”
She said the relief aid reached 55 metric tons. As the relief goods could not all be accommodated in the airplane other supplies were transported by land.
“Sana po kahit papaano makabawas ito sa inyong hirap na pinadadaanan ngayon. Mag-ingat pa rin tayong lahat. Mahalin natin ang Pilipinas (I hope this somehow alleviates the hardships that you are going through. Let’s all take care. Let’s love the Philippines),” the mayor said.
The assistance for Cebu included 559 sacks of 25-kilograms rice; 2,456 24-bottled water packs; 54 rolls of tarpaulin (trapal); 50 pieces of water container; 20 sacks of 50-kilogram rice; and 100 boxes of sardines containing 100 cans per box.
For Negros Occidental, relief aid consisted of 80 sacks of 50-kilogram rice, 100 boxes of sardines, 84 boxes of four-liter bottled water, and 50 cases of one-liter bottled water.
Leyte, for its part, will have assistance in the form of 800 24-bottle packs of 500ml bottled water, 100 sacks of 50-kilogram rice, 100 boxes of canned goods, and 562 bundles of assorted garments such as short pants, pants, and t-shirts.
Bohol’s relief assistance, meanwhile, included 400 24-bottle packs of 500ml bottled water, and 100 boxes of canned goods even as Dinagat Islands received 400 mega boxes containing seven cans of Purefoods Corned Beef 150g, 1 Skippy peanut butter, four cans of Spam, four cans of Chinese Style Luncheon Meat, three cans of corned beef 380g, two cans Purefoods Corned Beef with Chunks, six cans Delmar Tuna Chunks in vegetable oil, and one can spaghetti meat sauce.
Mayor Sara also sent off the rescue and medical teams from the City Health Office, Davao City Central 911’s Emergency Medical Sevices (EMS), Urban Search and Rescue (USAR), Fire Auxiliary Services (FAS), Southern Philippines Medical Center doctors, and social workers from City Social Welfare and Development Office (CSWDO) on December 19.
