Davao City Inday Mayor Inday Sara Duterte congratulated Tokyo 2020 Olympics women boxing silver medalist Nesthy Alcayde Petecio as the two met via a Zoom courtesy call on Friday afternoon, September 3.
Philippine Coast Guard District Davao CG Commodore Allan O. Corpuz and Coast Guard Ensign Vasit Venturillo, a former Davao City coach and Alveo Ironman Davao relay teammate of lawyer Mans Carpio, arranged the virtual courtesy call.
Mayor Duterte congratulated Petecio for her heroic feat in the Olympics.
âMapasalamaton ko sa garbo nga gihatag nimo sa mga taga Mindanao og garbo nga gihatag nimo sa mga kababainhan (I am thankful for the honor you brought to the people of Mindanao and for the pride you gave to us women),â the mayor said.
Mayor Duterte told Petecio that she has watched her matches and the other games of Filipino athletes in Tokyo.
Petecio, who was in Digos City during the virtual meeting, said she was thankful for meeting Mayor Duterte for the first time, even virtually.
âSobra kaayo ko ka thankful sa opportunity nga gihatagan ko oras og higayon nga maistorya si Mayor Sara po, sige ko ingon nga nakulbaan jud ko (I am very thankful for the opportunity that I was given to talk to Mayor Sara, I was always telling her I was nervous),â she said.
Petecio arrived on August 30 and went straight home to Sta. Cruz, Davao del Sur after the Philippine Coast Guard Davao District in Sasa, Davao City gave her a simple welcome program. She currently holds the rank of Petty Officer Third Class at the PCG.
The Dabawenya Olympian, a 2019 Aiba Womenâs Boxing World champion, began her amateur boxing career at age nine in Davao City with her father Teodoro, a former boxer, as her trainer. The family was then residing in Bago Gallera and stayed there for several years.
She was adopted by the Calinan boxing team, which was sponsored by the late Davao City councilor Luis Villafuerte and coached by Jun Israel Sagarino so she can compete in the National Amateur Boxing Championships in Cagayan de Oro City where she won a gold medal and earned her spot in the national boxing team at age 15.
It was then former Davao City mayor and now President Rodrigo R. Duterte who bought her plane ticket to Manila.
Petecio will own two real properties in Davao City â a condo unit at One Lakeshore Drive in Lanang from Suntrust Properties and a house and lot from the National Housing Authority courtesy of President Duterte â both congratulatory gifts for her.
She plans to put up a milk tea business in Davao City when her elder siblings return from working in Japan to manage it. CIO
