The Kadayawan Festival this year is featuring more traditions and cultural practices of Davao’s Indigenous Peoples with the increasing participation of the 11 tribes.
City Tourism Officer Gene Rose Tecson said the participation of the tribes will also make the “Subang Sinugdanan ug Pag Abli sa Kadayawan,” on August 2 more authentic.
The Subang Sinugdanan opens at 3 p.m at Magsaysay Park.
The Kadayawan is an annual festival of the city’s indigenous communities and is dedicated to the bountiful harvest. It is during August that the city sees an abundance of fruits – durian, mangosteen, lanzones, and rambutan. It also became a recognition of the city’s 11 tribes and reaffirming Dabawenyos unity towards common development and progress.
The opening of the 34th Kadayawan sa Dabaw will also feature the traditional dances of the city’s indigenous communities.
“We’d like to invite everybody to watch our Subang Sinugdanan and Pag Abli sa Kadayawan. This is different compared to the previous Kadayawan opening because our 11 tribes worked very closely with our office (for this year) so that the performances will be according to their traditions,” Tecson said.
She said members of the 11 tribes will be the ones performing the dances.
“This year’s opening is based on the 11 tribes since we are working hand-in-hand with them to (make sure the events are) based on their tradition and culture,” Tecson said.
This year’s Kadayawan marks the city’s first in celebrating the festival the whole month of August.
Several other major events are calendared for locals, visitors, and tourists to enjoy. CIO
