A new opportunity has opened for those aspiring to become medical doctors after the Davao City government signed last week a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) with the Jose Maria College (JMC) – College of Medicine for scholarships.

Deserving indigent students wanting to take medicine can now apply for a scholarship through the city government’s Education Benefit System Unit (EBSU) and enroll at the JMC College of Medicine for the school year 2019-2020 which starts in August.

Mayor Inday Sara Duterte said the opening of the medical course at the JMC widened the opportunity for students who would like to become physicians. The school became the third medical school which has scholarship deal with the city after the Davao Medical School Foundation and Brokenshire College.

“This will truly benefit the students from Davao City, (other parts of the) Davao Region and neighboring areas in Mindanao. We are also truly happy that JMC decided to partner with us in our scholarship program,” Mayor Inday said.

The scholarship will cover the entire tuition fee of the student, as well as a P20,000-book allowance per semester.

Mayor Sara said city government scholars will never be forced to render public service after they finished their studies.

“I want them to have the freedom to choose whether they will serve in the public service or private practice. I know that they are also in a hurry to help their family so we will never require them to serve the government after they finish their studies,” she said. CIO
