At least 35 parents of children in conflict for law (CICL) and children at risk attended on Tuesday the first leg of the Capability Building on Responsible Parenthood and Parenting skills training organized by the City Social Welfare and Development Office (CSWDO) at the World Palace.

City Social Welfare and Development Office (CSWDO) Head Julie P. Dayaday said that the participants of the first Batch were catered to on July 18-19 while the second batch, with 35 participants, will be catered to on July 20-21. They are parents whose children are currently at Bahay Pag-asa and parents of children who are already released from the facility.

Dayaday said that the capacity-building inputs cover spirituality, life skills, responsible parenthood. There is also an input on identifying hints of drug use, which the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency, in partnership with the City Anti-Drug Abuse Council (CADAC), talked about.

“So atong mga ginikanan ginatudluan nato to detect, to identify ilang mga anak kung ang ilang mga anak naa napuĂ˝ ginapanghimo nga dili maayo and then it will serve also as reminder sa mga ginikanan nga kita gyud ang magbantay sa atong mga anak kay we are responsible man sa atong mga anak (Our parents are taught to detect and identify if their children are doing inappropriate things and it will also serve as a reminder to parents that they are responsble for their children),” Dayaday said.

Dayaday said that the training is important because this means that the intervention for the children stops after their release from Bahay Pag-asa.

“Ang Bahay Pag-asa man gud is focused on the children, kaning atong district offices is focused on the family para while naga intervention ang bata didto naa puĂ˝ intervention sa parent para paggawas pagrelease sa bata ready ang bata ready pud ang parent (Bahay Pag-asa is focused on the children while our district offices are focused on the family. While there is the intervention for the children there is also one for parents so that once they are released the children are ready as well as their parents),” Dayaday said, adding that parents of CICL and children at risk are under the case management of district social workers, as part or would be part of the six-month aftercare after the release of children from Bahay Pag-asa. This made it easy for the CSWDO to identify them for capacity building.

Dayaday said that their goal is for the children and parents to become responsible citizens and be also self-reliant.
Other than capacity building the eligible families may also apply for livelihood assistance programs of the office. The office also provides psychosocial support for parents.

She said that the CSWDO continues to push for the welfare of children and their parents.

“Atoa sa mga ginikanan ug sa mga kabataan, ang city government of Davao kanunay gyud nga luyo sa inyuha nga mahimo mong magiging responsible kay always naa man gyuĂ˝ chance ang tanan naa man tay kamalian naa man tay palpak pero dili man pud pwede nga magdwell nalang ta sa atoang palpak kundili mahimo ni natong learning area or learning point (To our parents and children, the City Government of Davao will always be behind you despite the things that you did, to help you became responsible. There is always a chance for everyone to commit mistakes but we must not dwell on that, it should become a learning area or learning point),” Dayaday said.
She said that sometimes mistakes are both from the parent and the children and the city continues to make programs to help them become responsible and self-reliant. CIO
