The Davao City Sport Development Division (CSDD) has kicked off its sports clinic program for the summer with new sports disciplines added to be taught free of charge to young athletes.

The sports clinic is a free training program that aims to scout the most talented young athletes in the city, and cultivate their potential in their respective sports discipline.

“Ang programa man gud ani is intended to select, kadtong mga naay potential na mga bata, kay bata dali pa tudluan, at least ma-guide nato og tarong (The program is actually intended to select kids with the potential because kids can still be easily taught, at least we will be able to guide them well),” said CSDD Head Mikey Aportadera during the Madayaw Davao Program aired over the Davao City Disaster Radio on Tuesday.

Although the program is implemented all-year round, the sports clinic will be bigger and more comprehensive as both students and out-of-school youth are accepted into the course.

“Whether it’s summer or whether naay eskwela gapadayon gihapon atong sports clinic kay tumong ani we focus mainly on out-of-school youths sa mga barangay. So among gitagaan og higayon ang mga out-of-school youth na gi-endorso sa mga barangay kapitan aron matagaan sila’g equal opportunity sa atong ubang athletes sa Davao City na matagaan nato’g proper training and guidance (Whether it’s summer or there are classes the sports clinic continues as purpose of this is to focus mainly on out-school-youths in the barangays. So, we gave our out-of-school youth endorsed by the barangay captains an equal chance- along with the other athletes in the city- to be given proper training and guidance),” he explained.

The CSDD, he said, will be bringing the sports clinic to the barangays- in barangay sports facilities and schools -to make the search for talents more holistic and also to cut transportation costs for the participants. Some areas to be visited by the program are barangays in Paquibato, Marilog, Tibungco, and Mandug, among others.

Aportadera said the CSDD has expanded the program to include not only basketball and volleyball but also futsal, frisbee, rugby, football, table tennis and dance sports.

This month, the sports clinic will be providing sports training for volleyball, basketball, tennis, dance sport and football in various locations all over the city.

Those scouted as best of the best in their respective sports discipline will be awarded educational scholarships as they continue their training, Aportadera said.

The division, he added, has partnered with the best athletes, coaches, and sports educators in the city to provide the training and guidance to the participants.

“Ang mga nagatudlo ani kay atong mga medalists na athletes, ilang mga coaches pud ug trainers and even mga team members na atong ginasuportahan na nagadula sa gawas sa siyudad sa Davao, both national and international— mao na sila ang nagahatag og tabang sa gobyerno karon na mutudlo sa mga bata (The instructors will be our medalist athletes, their coaches, and even their team members whom we supported as they competed outside of Davao City, both national and international—they are the ones who are helping the local government to train the kids),” Aportadera said.

The CSDD chief said having the city’s best athletes as teachers and coaches in the sports clinic program will inspire young athletes to strive for excellence in their sport. CIO
