The City Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) has validated its continued commitment to protecting the environment with the three recognitions given during the Information Education Campaign Summit last June 27, 2023, at the Ritz Hotel, Davao City.
The City Government of Davao was recognized as the first local government unit in Region 11 to have drafted a City Plan of Action for the Prevention, Reduction, and Management of Marine Litter (OPCA-ML).
CENRO was also recognized for actively supporting and participating in the implementation of the plans and programs of the Davao River and the Talomo River Water Quality Management Area.
The Anti-Smoke Belching Unit of the CENRO was also recognized for actively supporting and participating in the implementation of the plans and programs of the Davao City Airshed Governing Board.
CENRO Head Engr. Marivic Reyes, in an interview with the City Information Office, said that the city government is thankful for these awards.
“The City is thankful for these awards as they serve as a testament to the city’s dedication and hard work towards sustainable practices and environmental stewardship. Not only that they validate the City’s commitment to protecting its environment along with its natural resources, but these recognitions also become a source of motivation and inspiration for the City to strive more in improving the local government,” Reyes said.
She added that for these recognitions, she would like to thank the Department of Environment and Natural Resources through the Environmental Management Bureau Region 11 for acknowledging the city’s environmental efforts.
She also thanked the entire local government, its officials and employees under strong leadership, and the Dabawenyos for their active participation in all of the city’s environmental initiatives.
Reyes said that for the City Plan of Action for the prevention, reduction, and management of marine litter (CPOA- ML), the office would like to thank the United Nations Human Settlements Program (UN-Habitat) through the Healthy Oceans and Clean Cities Initiative (HOCCI), and the Government of Japan for funding the program.
“Through the HOCCI, the City of Davao along with the Insitute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES), Environweave and Ridge to Reef, was able to carry out a series of multi-stakeholder consultations to analyze global and local marine litter issues, made an inventory of existing marine litter reduction and management initiatives, identify gaps and challenges, and develop the city’s local plan with NPOA-ML strategies and actions,” Reyes said.
