The City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office (CDRRMO) pre-emptively evacuated 24 families of Purok 46-B San Vicente Village in Barangay Talomo Proper after a landslide hit the area on Tuesday night.

The landslide damaged two houses. No fatalities or injuries were reported.

CDRRMO Head Alfredo Baloran said most of the evacuated families are taking shelter in the San Vicente Chapel while some chose to stay with relatives living in safer areas nearby.

Baloran said residents are prohibited from returning indefinitely as the area, which used to be a quarry site, still shows signs of potential mass wasting.

“Gipa-cordon na nato ang affected area didto ug gi-preemptive pud nato tong mga residences na naa sa duol kay medyo delikado pa man gud ang lugar (We have cordoned off the affected area and we also pre-emptively evacuated the residents nearby because the area is still dangerous),” he said during the Madayaw Dabaw program aired over the Davao City Disaster Radio on Wednesday.

The CDRRMO Chief added that the area had long been declared danger zone and that people residing there had been removed. However, other people came and built houses despite being aware of the danger.

“Actually, naa pa miy ginabadlung diha. Gipahawa naman nato tong mga namuyo didto pero naagian nato naay ginaconstruct (Actually, we are still reprimanding some people there. We have removed those residing there but we saw new structures being built),” Baloran said.

“Makita na nimo ang mga gibutang namo dinha na karatula nga ‘Landslide Prone Area’ nangahiwi na gani na siya kay tungod naigo sa nakadahili na yuta, gibalayan pa hinuon sa ibabaw na dapit (You can see the signs that we put there that say ‘Landslide Prone Area’ are now crooked because of the landslide, but some are still living in the upper areas),” he added.

The CDRRMO is coordinating with barangay officials and the City Engineer’s Office for the immediate removal of illegal structures in the area. CIO
