The Malagos Slaughterhouse, on June 21, was granted a one-year validity Double A or “AA” accreditation, which allows its slaughtered meat to be distributed to the whole Philippines, after compliance with the requirements of the National Meat Inspection Service.

Slaughter Master IV Engr. Joseph Gabut, in an interview with the City Information Office on Friday, said that the Malagos Slaughterhouse passed the assessment for the final accreditation conducted also on June 21.

“Gitan-aw nila from documentation, mga record up to the actual operations then yung sanitation namin, hygiene sa mga personnel and good manufacturing processes (They checked the documentation, our records, up to the actual operations then the sanitation and good manufacturing processes),” Gabut said.

He added that in January this year, the slaughterhouse was accredited Double-A but this was a probationary accreditation and will only last until July 4. Some non-conformities observed before the issuance of the probationary accreditation were already improved prior to the final accreditation.

“Yung mandatory requirement such as the CCTV and also the temporary canteen and also yung sira sira na equipment po doon naayos natin. And the [compliance] for the environmental laws and regulation… na conform na natin lahat (The mandatory requirement such as the CCTV, the temporary canteen and also equipment that needs repair have all been fixed. And the compliance to the environmental laws and regulation.., we are able to conform to all),” Gabut said.

He said that this development has improved the morale of the staff of the slaughterhouse.

Being a Double A slaughterhouse means that a slaughterhouse can cater, not only to public markets but also to malls and groceries.

“Lumalabas na po ang mga carcass na kinakatay sa slaughterhouse even sa Davao Region, gina-deliver na sa Surigao, Cagayan de Oro, Ozamiz and Butuan. So may conglomerate na food company ang nagapakatay po sa Malagos slaughterhouse (The carcasses of animals slaughtered in the slaughterhouse are released in Davao Region and are delivered to Surigao, Cagayan de Oro, Ozamiz and Butuan. There are also conglomerate food companies that are clients),” he said, adding that to the advantage of clients, the facility also have a chilling room, blast-freezing rooms, and cold storage rooms.

He said that the Double A accreditation really spells a wide range of target markets and also clients.

Gabut also said that even with the accreditation, there is no increase in fees. He also assured that the fees and charges for services are well within the bounds allowed in the Local Tax Code of Davao. CIO
